There are three major functional blocks of a tape drive:

Interface: It manages all the communication with the host computer. Tape command is relayed to the buffer controller for performing a specific job.Upon completion of the task, status is obtained from the buffer controller.
Buffer: The buffer receives tape commands from the interface and forwards them to the drive controller. Controller’s job is to transfer user data among interface, buffer memory, and drive's formatter. Buffer obtains the status from the controller and gives it back to the interface.
Drive: It executes all the tape commands. The drive controller oversees the servo system, motor drive, tape path, formatter, read/write, and front panel. The drive controller accepts tape commands from the buffer controller and executes them.

Each functional block is joined by a common communication link (CCL) to an adjacent functional block. The CCL encompasses common hardware and common software definitions. Interface communicates with the buffer using CCL. In turn buffer also communicates with the drive using a similar CCL.
