Tape Drives Recovery in Case of Data Loss

A tape drive is a data storage device similar to tape recorder that reads data from and writes it onto a tape. Streamer is another name for tape drive. Tape drives only allow for sequential-access of data, which means that if you want to read any specific block of data, you need to read all the preceding blocks.

There are three major functional blocks of a tape drive:

  • Interface: It manages all the communication with the host computer. Tape command is relayed to the buffer controller for performing a specific job.Upon completion of the task, status is obtained from the buffer controller.
  • Buffer: The buffer receives tape commands from the interface and forwards them to the drive controller. Controller’s job is to transfer user data among interface, buffer memory, and drive's formatter. Buffer obtains the status from the controller and gives it back to the interface.
  • Drive: It executes all the tape commands. The drive controller oversees the servo system, motor drive, tape path, formatter, read/write, and front panel. The drive controller accepts tape commands from the buffer controller and executes them.

Each functional block is joined by a common communication link (CCL) to an adjacent functional block. The CCL encompasses common hardware and common software definitions. Interface communicates with the buffer using CCL. In turn buffer also communicates with the drive using a similar CCL.

Since tape drive is used as a backing up device so data recovery in case of data loss is a job that needs to be done on the double. At Optimum Data Recovery we make sure that your Tape Drive Recovery is performed by out dedicated staff and state-of-the art technology.

Tape drives standards

  • DAT/DDS/4mm: It is a low cost tape backup drive which is used for the entry-level servers, workstations and PC’s.
  • DLT & SDLT: They are large capacity, robust and durable tape drives used for mid-size servers, high-end workstations and mainframe computers.
  • ALT: Affordable high performance tape backup drives, offers a cost effective tape backup solution for small enterprise server or high-end workstation.
  • LTO: It is the fastest, highest capacity and single-tape tape drive available. LTO is high performance tape backup for your large to mid-size enterprise server, workstation or mainframe computer.

Tape Drive Storage

The capacity of tape drives can vary from a few megabytes to 800 GB. Tape drive storage is based on the assumption of 2:1, so a tape drive might be known as 40/80, meaning that the standard storage capacity is 40 whilst the compressed storage capacity can be up to 80 with compression.

At Optimum Data Recovery all types of Tape Drive Recovery is performed by our talented technicians. Disk labs engineers are highly trained to handle all types of tape recovery situations.

Tape drives are used to provide back up for the computer systems and servers. They are considered fast and efficient, and can be, however, tapes can be written incorrectly, have early end of data markers, or become corrupt over an extended period of time.

Preventing Tape Drive Failure

Although, tape drives are vigorous and dependable, but common blunders and mistakes can dramatically increase the chances data loss.

  • Don't overwork your drive, as the tape drives have a specific duty cycle.
  • Make sure your system is supplying data to the drive at a sufficient rate.
  • Poor handling and storage can affect the lifespan of tapes and drives.
  • When operating tape drives, keep them away from carpets and other sources of contaminants.
  • Right protect the drive for virus protection.

Tape Recovery Tips

  • Use more than one tape because a small saving on tapes is often made at the expense of data worth thousands.
  • Tape Drives used on a daily basis should be replaced every six to nine months to avoid deterioration.
  • Analyze the backup software on daily basis
