NEC's hard drives provide portability and convenient installation. NEC hard drives use both serial and parallel interfaces. NEC focuses mainly on performance enhancement, functionality and reliability of disk drives, manufacturing of hard drives that are best suited for new emerging applications and new customer requirements.

NEC's parallel port hard disk drives are convenient to install since no adapter card is required. The connection to printer port with interface cable, attachment of external AC power adapter, installation software loading is required for the use of hard disk drive. The hard drive unit comes with "write protect" and "spin down" options. Enabling write protect will prevent all writes to the disk by any program. Spin down brings the drive spindle motor to a stop and can be engaged immediately or upon exceeding a specified period of time following disk activity.

NEC parallel port hard drives are compatible with both unidirectional and bidirectional standard parallel ports as well as with the Extended Capabilities Port (ECP) and Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP). These disks come with capacities ranging from 5104 MB to 2,550 MB. The rotational speed rates also vary and reach up to 5,200 RPM. SCSI is the main interface used to design the NEC manufactured hard drives.
