Ubuntu – New Dimension in Linux Technology
Linux is a new trend in operating-system, based on UNIX computing m
achine. It’s also a step forward in the direction of open source development, all the base code is available for all developers and users to use, make some changes and to redistribute.
In year 2004, based on Debian/Linux, a new distribution was launched, named as Ubuntu. The new release of Ubuntu comes in every six months. Ubuntu’s origin goes back to African word meaning showing humanity. .
Versions of Ubuntu:
Till now, most famous versions of Ubuntu are various, each focusing on different set of users, to display more functionality. Some of these are:
- Edubuntu: As it names suggest it’s a educational or class room based distribution that uses GNOME.
- Kubuntu: It’s a desktop distribution using KDE.
- Xubuntu: It’s considered to be a light-weight distribution using Xfce desktop environment.
GNOME, KDE and Xfce are the versions of Linux’s Debian kernel, to exhibit desktop environments and functionalities differently.
Ubuntu is considered to be equally suitable for both desktop and server based usage. The current Ubuntu release supports PC (Intel x86), 64-bit PC (AMD64) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures.
Ubuntu Desktop:
Ubuntu is conside
red to be the best choice available for home or office desktop usage. The software is not only free but it also provides many useful functionalities. The desktop is clean with no desktop icons to be displayed by default; you can customize the icons yourself. The themes are prepared by keeping in mind all the basic aesthetics and eye soothing features. The themes are total desktop environment changing schemes that refreshes your mind while working. Ubuntu Server:
Ubuntu’s server edition is also becoming famous due to the high rate performance and stability features. The Debian base is again used to implement the Ubuntu server. The server installations are easy and robust. The server pack of Ubuntu came in year 2005.
Ubuntu server comes up with an integrated platform with mail, DNS, file and database management internet and other services. If, Ubuntu’s server edition is compared with desktop edition, the server edition comes as a smaller CD image, with a lower level of hardware requirements. It runs on a minimum of 500 megabytes of hard disk and 64 megabytes of RAM
Ubuntu Salient Features:
- Ubuntu offers a strong usability focus, as compared to its mother Debian.
- Administrator access and the Ubiquity install tools are included with the Live CD. This CD makes the installation possible and easier without restarting.
- Standard tools and applications are pre-loaded in Ubuntu, as Internet browser Firefox and other tools like GIMP, OpenOffice.org with card and puzzle games.
- 256 MBs of RAM and 3 GB space of hard disk is required for Ubuntu.
Hence with new computing systems and operating systems coming in to the market, Linux’s Ubuntu is gaining more and more popularity. Even rumors about Google Goobunt are also in the air.’s
