IBM RAID Servers
IBM comes with a wide variety of RAID servers. ServeRAID is the most common storage controller available under IBM label. These controllers store critical RAID configuration information in multiple places. The RAIDs hence help in the most crucial portion of data recovery after the disaster. With the RAID hardware, the IBM ServeRAID software manager also provides small installations to large enterprise storage networks flexibility.
IBM ServeRAID controller can support up to 14 devices per SCSI channel, hence supporting data to an extent of 2TB. IBM also provides the flexibility to use enhanced RAID levels, so in addition to RAID 1, 1 and 5, IBM’s enhanced RAID-1 (1E) or Enhanced RAID-5(5EE). These enhanced RAIDs let you mirror data with three or more disk, for more efficient utilization of hard disk drives.
ServeRAID 6 (Ultra320 SCSI controller)
- Two channels support up to 14 HDDs per channel, providing massive RAID-protected data storage with up to 28 HDDs
- 128MB battery-backed cache
- Support for RAID levels 0, 1, 10, 1E, 5, 50, 00, 1EO and new improved 5EE delivers more choices to meet unique business needs
- Supports Ultra320 or Ultra160 SCSI HDDs
- This controller option has been rigorously tested on supported systems through the IBM ServerProven program with a wide range of popular network operating systems.
- Supports Microsoft 2-node clustering
ServeRAID-8i SAS/SATA2 Controller
It’s a 0 Channel RAID controller that perform very well with the SCSI (Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)) and SATA 2 drives with full RAID technology. It is designed to manage internal data storage in x366, x260, x460 and entry x206m, x306m series.
RAID Family Features
RAID Server family characteristics are shown in detail below:
- Following operating systems are supported:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 AS/ES/WS*
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 AS/ES for EM64T*
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
- AS/ES/WS*
- SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 with Service Pack 1 for Intel x86 and EM64T
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 for EM64T

- Enhanced functionality in the ServeRAID Manager program:
- Ability to manage FlashCopy backups of logical drive data on external storage enclosure
- Fixed RAID Level-5 rebuild problem
- Fixed notification problem for lost cache data
IBM RAID storage servers and controllers and other storage devices are considered ideal for the enhancement in external storage to expand the internal capacity of the system using high rate RAID systems.
