CD stands for Compact Disc. It comes in RW and R formats where RW format is a type of CD that enables you to write onto it in multiple sessions while on CD-R data can be written only once. With CD-RW drives and disks, optical disk is treated just like a floppy or hard disk, writing data onto it multiple times.
DVD stands for digital versatile disc or digital video disc. It is a type of optical disk technology similar to the CD. A DVD holds a minimum of 4.7GB of data, enough for a full-length movie. DVDs are commonly used as a medium for digital representation of movies and other multimedia presentations that combine sound with graphics. DVD uses MPEG-2 to compress video data.

Restoring data from CD-R or DVD-R

In most of the cases, while writing on –R format of CDs or DVDs, the data may get caught up or some system error may come up during the writing. In this case, writing more data is not possible on the –R disk, since only one writing session is allowed on such disks. Reclaiming space is not possible. However, if the disc is made with multiple sessions and a considerable amount is left on the disc, it may be possible to write a second session that erases the essential "table of contents" of the previous session.
